THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Last week’s top story was about scams targeting seniors and we saw another example recently. “Seniors: Access The Equity In Your Home Without Selling It” All of the fine print in this clever tale seems to add to the legitimacy of the scam. However, the domain ranight.top was registered on July 10 by someone named Pramod from Utter Pradesh, India using the Registrar Alpnames. It’s being hosted in Quebec but we can’t find any such website for it. Do you know any senior citizen who might have clicked that link? By the way, TinEye.com informs us that the photo in this scam has been used on multiple websites in Poland and Greece amongst many other web pages.

1-Seniors-Access the equity in your home

One of our readers sent us a photo of this “Prize Eligibility” from National Magazine Exchange she received. National Magazine Exchange is a legitimate business but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sleazy or use misleading tactics. If you look carefully at the certificate it only says that the recipient is eligible to win. We did some digging on this organization and found lots of complaints against their sleazy and misleading practices. Here are just a few links:

Phish NETS: Worst Apple Phishing Attack and BlockChain

This phishing scam pretending to be from Apple.com has to be one of the worst phishing attacks we have ever seen in two years of doing this work! We found this phish within minutes of its release but the link to the graphic was already broken. It came from cloud@ci.apple-valley.mn.us . They couldn’t at least have sent it from username “iCloud?” “Hello We have unfortunately been unable to review some information in your Profile.” But look carefully at the bottom grey box! “If you would prefer not to receive emails of this type from Southern Lawns, please click here” and a mailing address to Southern Lawns PO Box is provided. Southern Lawns? Really? We don’t even need to point out that a mouse-over of “Continue and SignOn” points to the domain kensingtonroofing.co.uk, a hacked web site in the UK. (But I guess we did anyway.) You know the drill…

Delete!

3-Phish-worst Apple phish

Blockchain is a kind of digital bitcoin bank but this next phish is not from Blockchain. The email came from noreply@billi.be. The 2-letter country code “.be” is for Belgium (Surprise! Not Belarus or Belize). A mouse-over of the blockchain.info link points to a weird website with a name too long to pronounce and located in Brazil (See the 2-letter country code .br)

Your Money: Perfect Gift for Dad, Natural Nasal Relief, and Shark Tank Investment

Father’s Day may be long gone but the criminals who push out this junk must be hopeful anyway… “Perfect Gift for Dad” is anything but. Barbeque Stands? Happy Grilling? We’re seeing a lot of bogus emails coming from the domain expansionshop.top.

Just delete.

5-Perfect Gift for Dad

Would you like some “Natural NASAL RELIEF?” You’ve got to read this email. It’s gross AND funny. I can’t wait to be made into a NEW person in just 24 hours. Thanks “Dr._Dave”! By the way, the domain rimarcebl.com was registered on July 11 by “Administrator Administrator” from Kansas City, MO through Enom. The site is being hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.

Deeeleete!

Apparently the popularity of the show Shark Tank has turned them into an often used tool by the criminal gangs. We find lots of malicious/scam emails made to look like a special product that was featured on Shark Tank. It’s all phoney-baloney including this “Amazing new product hits America…” “Helps you to tighten up” “Get rid of flabby tummy, thick legs, and jiggly arms by removing nasty excess flab in just days instead of weeks or months.” Yeah, and we have land to sell you in Atlantis. Our good friend Judy Santiago registered this domain, along with more than 3900 other scam domains. What does it take to get this person banned from all Registrars and all of her scam domains shut down?

TOP STORY: The Best Award-Winning Scam Story Evah!

Sometimes we find scam pitches that are worthy of a Pulitzer prize because they are so well written. In just a few paragraphs the scammer has connected to the reader, made you his best friend, pulled you into his life’s drama and turned you into a confidant. He’s created a mini-novel, a novella in just one email and it deserves an award! So we’re going to start the John Newbery National Hugo Pulitzer Scam Email Award!

But before we announce this year’s winner, we need to give you some important context to understand why this year’s winner is so good by showing you writers that are…. Well, meh.  Such as this email sent by “Neil Trotter” from the Chilean email address noc@sunrise.ch using the subject line “Your Fund Donation.” (But Neil did score a few points by using the domain sunrise.ch.  “Sunrise” evokes a certain awakening and emotions of hope, eh?)

Not stellar, right? Where’s the drama? Did the writer awaken your emotions and pull you into his story? Clearly not. It was flat. Now how about this email that came by way of France from aseemmohan_consult2010@yahoo.fr

AWFUL! This is a complete failure to engage the audience. No effort at all. And why would anyone wish to get involved for a mere $6000 anyway. Critics panned Mark Frank from his opening line! We need more “Je ne sais quoi.”

What about this effort from Diplomatic Agent Kim Thomas through the email address usman.bello101@yahoo.com.au…

I’m Diplomatic Agent Kim Thomas I have been trying to reach you onyour Email about four hours now, just to inform you about my successfularrival in Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, with your ATM MASTERCARD.which I have been instructed by Dhl DELIVERY COMPANY to be deliveredto you.The Airport Authority demanded for all the legal back up papers toprove to them that the ATM MASTER CARD ready delivery, I have presented thepapers I handed to them and they are very much pleased with the papers Ipresented but the only thing that is still keeping me here is the airportcustom yellow tag and International Delivery Permit certificate. which isnot placed on the package, one of the Airport Authority has advise that weget the custom yellow tag and International Delivery Permit certificatewhich cost $99. Regard DIPLOMATIC.Kim Thomas TELEPHONE:(940)202-8432

NO, NO, NO! There’s no build up. The reader isn’t invited into his story. It’s cold and sterile. Plus the elements don’t flow and the missing spaces make it difficult to connect to the character. This simply won’t do! So what does work? Ahhh…. This year’s winner of the 2016 John Newbery National Hugo Pulitzer Scam Email Award gave us a remarkable piece of literature. It engages the reader, evokes strong emotion, and gives us a worthy protagonist! After reading it we’re certain you’ll want to read it again because the writer has created rich, complex characters with whom you can connect with multiple senses as you fill in the rich scenes created by the author! This year’s John Newbery National Hugo Pulitzer Scam Email Award goes to Ms. Marilis Mannik from Estonia for her magnificent work titled “Urgent from Hospital.” Trust us, you’re going to love this one…

Subject: Urgent From Hospital

Hello My Beloved, this is Ms Marilis Mannik from Estonia writing from the hospital here in Ivory Coast; therefore this email is very urgent to attend. I want you to know that I’m dying here in this hospital right now which i don’t know if i will see some few days to come.

My Beloved, i was informed by my doctor that i got poisoned and it affected my liver and i can only live for some days. The reason why i contacted you today is because i know that my step mother wanted to kill me and take my inheritance from my late Father. I have a little adopted child named Andrew C. Mannik that i adopted in this Country when my late Father was alive and $3.5 million Dollars i inherited from my late father. My step mother and her children they are after Andrew right now because they found out that Andrew was aware of the poison, and because i handed the documents of the fund over to him the day my step Mother poisoned my food, for that reason they do not want Andrew to expose them, so they are doing everything possible to kill him.

My Beloved, please i want you to help him out of this country with the money, he is the only one taking good care of me here in this hospital right now and even this email you are reading now he is the one helping me out. I want you to get back to me so that he will give you the documents of the fund and he will direct you to a well known lawyer that i have appointed, the lawyer will assist you to change the documents of the fund to your name to enable the bank transfer the money to you..

This is the favor i need when you have gotten the fund:

(1) Keep 30% of the money for Andrew until he finish his studies to become a man as he has been there for me as my lovely Son and i promised to support him in life to become a medical Doctor because he always desire for it with the scholarship he had won so far. I want you to take him along with you to your country and establish him as your son.

(2) Give 20% of the money to handicap people and charity organization. The remaining 50% should be yours for your help to Andrew.

Note; This should be a code between you and my son Andrew in this transaction “Hospital” any mail from him, the Lawyer he will direct you to, without this code “Hospital” is not from the Andrew, the Lawyer or myself as i don’t know what will happen to me in the next few hours.

Finally, write me back so that Andrew will send you his pictures to be sure of whom you are dealing with. Andrew is 14years now, therefore guide him. And if i don’t hear from you i will look for another person or any organization.

May Almighty God bless you and use you to accomplish my wish. Pray for me always.

Ms Marilis Mannik

BRAVA Ms. Mannik! BRAVA! Your coveted award comes with a cash prize of $250,000! Congratulations! Please wire $350 in advance to pay for the small fees required to ship your John Newbery National Hugo Pulitzer Scam Email Award and accompanying check for $250,000.

FOR YOUR SAFETY: Great Stuff for You, Need Your Help, and News

TDS is seeing a resurgence in the “casual email” inviting you to click a malicious link. The purpose is to try to infect your computer with malware. Would you have fallen for any of these three? Especially that last one… “I’ve just read some interesting news about our friend, just look at him, he is a star! Social engineering at its best.
